Harrison Polk

Harrison Polk

I see a recent press release published by The Times, a British publication, which reports a list of the scores of the presidents of the United States by a panel of eight historians as follows:

10 best Presidents Top 10 Worst Presidents Lincoln, Eisenhower G. Buchanan Bush Jr. Washington Truman Pierce Hoover F. Roosevelt, Reagan Van Buren Harding Jefferson Polk Garfield Harrison T. Wilson, Roosevelt, Nixon Filmore

Rating the Presidents is strictly an academic exercise. Historians differ in general, based on the time they lived and future perspectives of history, usually a reliable indicator. The public, however, uses a different standard, based more on popularity and approval. Tan, Note the absence of Kennedy and Clinton on this list, even if Kennedy had not finished at number 11 on the list of the best, Jimmy Carter barely escaping the bottom 10.

Be Clinton remains popular, but historians say that although Clinton left office with high approval rate is considered poor. They said they passed legislation progressive (welfare reform), but loaded himself with the Lewinsky scandal and has landed at number 23. One panelist said Ben Macintyre, "Clinton promised much, made so little shame and all. "Is not this what they call a thief?

As an avid student of history I would eliminate presidential F. Roosevelt, Top 10, based on his poor performance during the Great Depression. Probably a good mark for his charisma, skills communication and leadership, especially during the Second World War. They also tend to increase further in Polk which places was a tall man with the and senior management who has chaired our manifest destiny as a nation. Wilson also drop outside the top 10 since most of his term was used by his wife, not him. Maybe we should give it 10.

Besides, I'm sorry for Harrison and Garfield. Harrison died after 23 days in office, when he fell ill, for not wearing a coat, while giving his inaugural address by the time of freezing and poor Garfield was shot and killed after 4 months in office. So why are they on the list of the 10 worst? Perhaps we should consider as "absent.

Who can argue with Washington and Lincoln our greatest presidents. While the challenges are different today really believe that led to this renaissance?
